New Marshall University study highlights how sleep apnea accelerates cellular aging and cardiometabolic decline
Marshall University
A new review published in Sleep Medicine Reviews sheds light on the biological mechanisms that may explain why patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) face higher risks for heart disease, diabetes and other age-related conditions. The study, led by researchers at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, details how OSA-induced stressors can trigger cellular senescence—effectively accelerating the aging process at the molecular level. They suggest that treating sleep apnea by combining conventional therapies with emerging interventions that target senescent cells could offer new opportunities to blunt OSA-related cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

How sleep is a surprising habit that raises blood pressure
EatingWell
If you’re on a quest to improve your numbers but diet and exercise don’t seem to be doing the trick, your sleep habits may need some attention. Different sleep variables, like how long you sleep, how well you sleep and how regular your sleep schedule is, can all affect your risk for high blood pressure, which is also related to obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment options can help keep your airway open, improve oxygen levels and reduce stress on your heart and blood vessels to support healthy blood pressure. Learn how small, consistent changes can make a big difference in your overall sleep quality and blood pressure management.

Sleep specialist from Cleveland Clinic weighs in on sleeping positions
WKBN 27
Whether it’s your left or right side, your back or even your stomach — most people tend to go to sleep in the same position every night. But does your sleeping position really matter? Dr. Nancy Foldvary, a sleep specialist at Cleveland Clinic, says that conditions like deviated septums, or other chronic conditions like arthritis, acid reflux and heart failure can play a role in how we sleep.

GLP-1 drugs help protect against sleep apnea, study says
Medical Xpress
Weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Zepbound might help protect people from health risks related to sleep apnea, a new study says. Results showed everyone taking a GLP-1 drug had a lower short-term risk of death, but those with sleep apnea had a 20% lower risk than those without the breathing disorder. Based on these results, doctors should consider whether a person has sleep apnea when deciding whether to prescribe a GLP-1 drug, researchers said.
